Did you know? National S'mores Day is celebrated yearly on August 10 in the United States.
So, I must admit that I still have a pack of marshmallows in my pantry after switching to real food a year and a half ago. (Why is it that the worst foods for you are the hardest to exclude?) They are at least one year old, but they are just so nice to have on hand when my hubby and I plan a last minute campfire with our friends on a fall Sunday evening.
The thought of making homemade marshmallows has just seemed like too much effort for something so sugary. (I don't bake much.) So there is my excuse for why I still have store-bought marshmallows in my pantry. Besides we hardly eat any of them anyways, I buy them mostly for our guests. But no matter what excuse I make, they are still chemical-laden little white balls of fluff. Just look at the list of ingredients!
High Fructose Corn Syrup will cause weight gain, may contain mercury, leads to mineral loss, and can elevate blood pressure. And we didn't even look at the issues surrounding all the other chemically sounding ingredients.
To avoid all these nasties and not use up my precious time and honey making my own, I decided on using a substitute… bananas! They are sweet, mushy, and taste great with chocolate and graham crackers! Using dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate make these S'mores a great summer treat that won't cause a sugar overload.
